SEG Light Box Brightness and Uniformity: A Buyer Inspection Guide

Assess the fitted SEG graphic, control viewing conditions and agree a repeatable measurement map. Use recorded observations to close lighting or print issues.

Agreeing the appearance of an SEG light box is easier when the sample, graphic and inspection conditions are recorded together. This guide helps retail visual-merchandising buyers and quality teams assess the illuminated face, distinguish a lighting issue from a print or fitting issue, and give BrandMate Display a useful acceptance brief.

Start here: review a representative light box in the required size with the intended fabric graphic fitted. Look at the center, edges, corners and joints under agreed room lighting. Keep the sample revision and viewing conditions with the photographs. If the order needs numerical brightness or uniformity limits, agree the measured quantity, instrument, positions and calculation before approving the sample.

Define the appearance you want to approve

A useful approval describes both visibility and consistency. A pale campaign background should have the agreed appearance across the face, while printed details should remain readable from the intended approach. More light at the center does not settle whether the corners, long edges or joined sections are acceptable.

Write down the finished visible area, single- or double-sided layout, proposed frame and lighting configuration, graphic reference and intended viewing position. For a double-sided unit, identify each face separately. Keep indoor ambient lighting and window-facing daylight conditions distinct; confirm the actual installation environment rather than treating one workshop view as approval for every location.

Use two graphic references for two different questions

Use the intended campaign print to decide whether the completed display presents the artwork acceptably. Its dark and pale areas transmit light differently, so variation across a colorful image cannot by itself establish the lighting system’s uniformity.

When the team needs to investigate the lighting distribution, agree a separate neutral diagnostic graphic using the specified production substrate and an identified print condition. Record its material, artwork and fitting method. Compare like-for-like reference areas; do not calculate a lighting-uniformity ratio between a dark printed logo and an unrelated pale background. Keep the campaign-appearance approval and the diagnostic-lighting review as separate records.

Fit the fabric using the model’s instructions, check that the silicone edge is seated and photograph the corners and face before switching on. The frame, fabric specification, tension and lighting arrangement work together. A wrinkle, displaced edge or changed substrate can affect the observed result without establishing that an LED component has failed.

Make the visual comparison repeatable

Place the sample in a stable, supported position and use its specified supply and control setting. Follow the stated operating instructions and agree when readings or photographs will be taken after switch-on. Record the actual timing; do not assume a universal warm-up period. Have appropriately qualified personnel handle electrical installation, exposed components and service work.

For repeat photographs, retain the same camera, position, lens, exposure and white-balance setting. Keep room lighting and the fitted graphic unchanged. Include an overall face view and detail views of the areas under review. Avoid an exposure that clips the pale areas, because those areas then lose visible detail. A normal photograph can document a band or hotspot, but it does not substitute for calibrated photometric measurement.

Check the display from the agreed ordinary viewing positions as well as the inspection position. Move yourself rather than handling or tilting an energized installation. Record reflections and direct sunlight where relevant. The buyer should approve the appearance in the intended context while the technical reviewer keeps the controlled comparison conditions clear.

Choose the measurement that answers your question

For a numerical assessment of the visible face, specify luminance in candela per square metre (cd/m²), measured from a stated direction with a suitable instrument. Illuminance in lux describes light arriving at a measurement surface. A lux reading taken near the cabinet is not interchangeable with a luminance reading of the fitted face. Retain the measurement setup, not just a number labelled “brightness.”

Match the acceptance question to its evidence
Acceptance questionUseful evidenceConditions to record
Does the fitted campaign look acceptable?Approved physical sample, written appearance criteria and controlled photographs.Artwork, fabric, fitting, ambient lighting, viewing position and camera settings.
How bright is the visible face?Luminance readings in cd/m² from an agreed direction.Instrument identification, calibration status, viewing geometry, measured area, graphic and power/control setting.
How much does the face vary?Position-labelled readings on the agreed diagnostic graphic, with an explicitly defined calculation.Point map, edge exclusions if any, sampling area, raw values and acceptance limits.
Is the color appearance suitable?Fitted illuminated artwork reference; suitable color measurement when numerical values are required.Graphic specification, viewing conditions, instrument/method and the actual color quantity being evaluated.

Color temperature and color-rendering figures answer different questions from spatial uniformity. Neither establishes that a particular printed color will match an approved campaign. If color is critical, include the illuminated production print in the approval and have the responsible reviewer specify any additional measurements. No optical values or pass limits are claimed for the pictured product in this guide.

Map the face before taking readings

Mark the measurement positions on a drawing of the actual visible opening. Cover the center, intermediate areas, corners and long edges; add positions around a join or any visible band. Give every position a label and coordinate so a later inspector can repeat the same map. Agree the number and spacing of points for the size and question being investigated rather than adopting an arbitrary grid as a universal standard.

Use the instrument’s instructions to define the viewing direction, working distance and measurement area. Keep the sampled area inside the intended reference region and avoid including the frame in a face reading unless that is part of the agreed method. Record any edge exclusion and why it exists; a uniformity score should not silently omit a visible corner defect.

Agree the calculation in advance. For example, minimum divided by mean and minimum divided by maximum give different ratios. Identify which calculation applies, retain every raw reading and define whether extra investigation points are included in the acceptance map. Evaluate the agreed numerical result alongside the written visual criteria. An average alone can conceal a localized problem.

Use a visible symptom to plan the next check

A photograph of a symptom is the start of diagnosis. Locate it on the face drawing, identify whether it appears with the campaign and diagnostic graphics, then agree a check with the responsible team. The observations below do not prove a component failure or authorize opening an energized cabinet.

Brightness or color appears to change during operationElapsed time, setting, room conditions and repeated observations at identified positions.Refer the operating change to the responsible technician. After a documented correction, repeat the agreed operating sequence and appearance check.

If there is damaged wiring, an electrical fault indication or unsafe behavior, isolate the equipment using the applicable instructed procedure and refer it to qualified personnel. Do not bypass a driver, alter wiring or cover an emitter to obtain an acceptable photograph. Keep the defect record open until the responsible reviewer accepts the correction and recheck.

Keep sample approval useful for the bulk order

Bind the accepted appearance to the actual dimensions, frame revision, lighting arrangement, driver/control setting, fabric and print reference. A smaller light box can show a finish or material, but it does not automatically approve the illumination of a longer or sectional face. Identify the production sizes still needing representative evidence.

Agree who inspects the sample, who reviews measurements and who authorizes production. Before shipment, identify the production units to be checked, the method and the limits. If a light source, driver, frame depth, fabric or print process changes, ask which parts of the appearance approval must be repeated. These are proposed buyer controls, not a claim that any particular batch has passed a test.

For frame dimensions, hardware, electrical documents and packing, use the broader LED light box sample-acceptance guide. Keep this article’s illumination record alongside that complete sample record.

Protect the approved appearance through receiving and care

Agree how the fabric graphic, frame sections and lighting components will be protected and identified in the pack. At receiving, match the parts and graphic revision to the approval record, follow the instructed assembly sequence, and repeat the visual check before treating the installed unit as accepted. Photograph a transport-related crease or displaced part before changing it so the receiving issue can be distinguished from the original sample result.

Use the cleaning and storage method specified for the actual fabric, print and frame finish. Keep graphics clean, dry and protected as instructed; do not assume washing or chemical cleaning is suitable for every print. Follow the safe graphic-change and service procedures. For replacement graphics, retain the fitted-size template and substrate/print reference, then check the new graphic illuminated in the approved configuration.

Questions buyers ask about SEG illumination

Is a brighter sample always the better choice?

Choose the appearance that works with the intended artwork, viewing position and ambient light. Review uniformity and readability as well as any numerical luminance requirement. Agree the complete offered configuration before selecting on a single center reading.

Can a phone photograph prove a uniformity percentage?

An ordinary phone image can record a visible symptom when its settings are controlled. It does not establish a calibrated luminance ratio. Use an agreed instrument, point map and calculation when the order requires a numerical result.

Should every point on a colorful print have the same reading?

No. Different printed areas can transmit different amounts of light. Assess campaign appearance with its approved artwork and investigate lighting distribution with a separately agreed diagnostic graphic. Record which reference each result describes.

How should we assess edge-lit or direct backlighting?

The layout, frame geometry, graphic and any optical layers must work together at the required size. Identify the quoted construction and judge a representative finished sample. The architecture name alone is not a measured result.

What should we send when the specification is custom?

Email BrandMate Display the required size, quantity, artwork, installation location and any brightness or uniformity acceptance requirement. Ask which configuration and sample evidence are available. Confirm MOQ, sample cost, timing, documentation and commercial terms in the project quotation.
