Outdoor Double-Sided LED Signage: What “Weatherproof” Should Actually Specify

A buyer-focused guide to outdoor LED signage covering IP requirements, sealing, drainage, electrical protection, mounting, service access and realistic weatherproof specifications.

“Weatherproof” is not a complete specification. Outdoor signage has to be matched to the exposure, mounting position, electrical system and service conditions of the project. Buyers should ask which part of the assembly is protected, how that protection is verified and whether the claimed rating applies to the exact model being quoted.

Start with the installation environment

  • Is the sign fully exposed or under an awning?
  • Is it wall mounted, projecting, suspended or freestanding?
  • Will wind-driven rain reach the electrical compartment?
  • Is direct sun or high ambient temperature a concern?
  • Can technicians access the sign after installation?

IP rating should be model-specific

An IP rating should not be copied from one product to every outdoor SKU. Ask for the rating that applies to the quoted configuration and what enclosure or test evidence supports it. If a project requires a specific rating, put that requirement in the RFQ before the supplier finalizes the design.

Sealing is only one part of water management

Gaskets and sealed joints matter, but so do drainage paths, cable entries, fastener penetrations and service openings. A design that traps water can fail even when individual components are described as waterproof. Ask how the sign handles water that reaches the enclosure during real installation conditions.

Electrical protection and maintenance access

Outdoor signage should have a clear plan for power entry, driver location, cable routing and future service access. Confirm the destination voltage and plug or hard-wiring requirement. Do not hide a serviceable driver in a location that becomes inaccessible after the sign is mounted.

Mounting loads must be reviewed separately

Double-sided projecting signs create different loads from flat wall-mounted light boxes. Bracket design, wall substrate, sign size and local wind conditions affect the installation. The signage supplier can provide product dimensions and mounting details, but the final site fixing may also require local installer or engineering review.

Specification itemWhat the buyer should request
Outdoor exposureFully exposed / sheltered / semi-exposed
IP requirementRequired rating and evidence for the quoted model
ElectricalInput voltage, driver location, cable entry, service access
MountingWall/projecting/suspended, bracket details, local fixing conditions
MaterialsFrame, face, finish and hardware suited to project conditions
MaintenanceHow graphics, LEDs and power components can be serviced

RFQ checklist for outdoor signage

Send the sign dimensions, quantity, single/double-sided requirement, mounting method, installation height, destination country, electrical standard, expected exposure and required IP level if specified by the project. Include drawings or site photos when available.
