Storefront sign brightness serves two skies and one neighbourhood. At noon the face competes with daylight and loses quietly – the “looks closed while open” problem. After dark the same face punches into a sleeping street and collects the complaint that turns a permitted sign into a grievance. The answer is not a brightness number; it is a range with a schedule. This page gives the method: what daytime readability actually depends on, how the night side is engineered, and the settings that keep both audiences quiet.
A face fights the sky with contrast, not brute force. Dark text on an evenly lit field reads further than a uniformly bright panel at any output, and design choices – type weight, field colour, message length – move readability more than watts do. Output matters as proportion: a west-facing facade fighting low sun needs more than a shaded courtyard, and an in-window display fights glass reflections on top of everything.
That is why the site description is a specification input. “North wall, open plaza” and “west wall behind glass” produce different faces from the same factory. Our brightness as a checkable target guide turns the site description into numbers, and the CCT and CRI guide covers the colour side of readability.
The range comes from a dimmable driver and a controller that can hold a schedule. Dimming is designed at the factory – it lives in the power stage – which is why retrofitting it after installation means replacing the driver, not flipping a setting. Three layers do the work:

| Period | Setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Morning to noon | full output; verify contrast against the day’s sky | the sun is the competitor |
| Afternoon | output trimmed as ambient falls | constant output wastes power and starts to glare |
| Evening trade | mid-level, comfortable to approach | the face now leads the eye, not fights the sky |
| Late night | minimum or off, per code and neighbours | the audience is asleep; the job is done |
Encoded as a controller schedule, the pattern polices itself. Written into the specification, it becomes the answer the reviewer and the neighbour both accept.
Face output is measurable: luminance or lux at a stated distance, recorded on the finished unit next to the uniformity grid. Buyers who ask for the measurement get approvals that close quickly and audits that end in minutes. Suppliers who offer only adjectives are guessing on your application – and on your neighbour relationships.
Where a code caps luminance, the specification should cite the rule beside the measured figure. The pairing turns a subjective dispute into a checkbox, and it is the difference between one approval and three resubmissions.
Proportionate to its worst-case ambient – direct sun for exposed facades, overcast daylight for shaded ones – verified by measurement on the finished face. Brighter than that buys complaints, not readability.
Where the sign runs into the evening, practically yes: a dimmable driver with a schedule or sensor is the only way one face serves noon and midnight. Specify it at the factory.
Because a daylight face is glaring after dark, and bedrooms face streets. Complaints drive enforcement in many jurisdictions; a night schedule removes the cause rather than the symptom.
Enormously. North faces hold contrast all day, west faces fight low sun, glass doubles the problem with reflections. Send the orientation with the inquiry and the quote comes back proportionate.
The lowest output a face reaches smoothly, without flicker or colour shift. It is a driver characteristic, stated as a percentage of full output, and it decides how dark the night level can honestly go.
Measured on the finished unit – luminance or lux at a stated distance – recorded in the QC report beside the uniformity grid. Ask for the number, keep the record with the approval file.
Brightness is a range with a schedule, specified in hardware and verified with numbers. Size the output to the site’s worst hour of sun, give the face a factory dimming range, encode the hours – and the sign reads at noon, sleeps at midnight, and never meets an unhappy neighbour or a code officer twice.
Send the wall orientation, surroundings and operating hours – the brightness specification with measured output comes back with the quotation within 24 hours. Low MOQ accepted, wholesale commonly from 5 pieces per design.
We will reply within 2 hours.
