Booth Height Rules: What the Manual Really Says

Booth height rules explained: how caps differ by booth type, where the real number is written, and which modular systems can be trimmed instead of rebuilt.

Why This Rule Catches People After the Build

The height number lives in the exhibitor manual, and the manual is released weeks after the display order. By the time anyone reads it, the frame is cut and the graphics are printed.

The result is a familiar sequence: the structure arrives, the floor manager measures it, the exhibitor is told to remove or shorten it, and the booth opens with a gap where the brand was meant to be.

Caps Differ by Booth Type

Booth typeTypical capUsually risesUsually does not
Inline, one open sideAround 8 ft / 2.44 mOpen framing, low countersSolid walls above the cap, towers
Corner, two open sidesSimilar capHigher walls on open facesBuilding above the neighbour line
Peninsula, three open sidesHigher, with solid-height limitsCentral towers, approved hanging signsFull-height walls on open sides
Island, four open sidesTallest allowanceTowers, double-deck with sign-offAnything above rigging height

These are typical figures, not universal ones. The venue manual governs, and the hall’s rigging height can be lower than the published rule.

Where the Real Number Lives

The manual. A rules chapter plus a separate rigging form. This is the authority.

The floor plan. Booth type is marked there, and the type decides the cap. A stand sold as a corner but drawn as inline follows the inline rule.

The venue’s technical contact. One email with the structure height, booth number and a question about hanging signs produces a written answer to show at move-in.

The rigging contractor. If anything hangs, the contractor confirms height, load and the approval route.

Designing to Fit Any Cap

Build in one metre bays so a section can be removed on site. Keep the main message below 2.4 metres. Use open framing with printed skins, which reads as a wall without being solid construction and is often allowed higher.

Reserve whatever height the booth is granted for one element, usually a tower or a hanging sign. Spreading height across a whole back wall is how a design becomes unfixable.

Compliance Checks Before Shipping

1. Measure the assembled height including base, feet and castors.

2. Write the number on the setup sheet next to the drawing.

3. Photograph the elevation against a tape measure.

4. Get the venue answer in writing.

5. Pack the shorter leg set.

Mistakes Worth Avoiding

Measuring the frame, not the booth. Feet and castors add height nobody counted.

Assuming the brochure cap applies. Booth type on the plan decides, and plans get re-drawn.

Hanging a sign without approval. Rigging is a separate permission with its own deadline.

Buying a welded tower for a hall you have not measured. Modular bays are insurance against a rule you read late.

Common Questions

How tall can an inline booth be?

Commonly around 8 ft, about 2.44 m, measured to the top of the structure including base and feet. The venue manual overrides that figure.

Where do I find the height rule for my booth?

In the exhibitor manual and on the floor plan notes, confirmed in writing by the venue’s technical contact.

Do hanging signs count against booth height?

They are governed separately, with their own approval, deadline and load confirmation from the rigging contractor.

Can a booth be shortened on site?

Only if it is modular. Standard frame bays come apart and shorter legs replace longer ones; a welded tower cannot.

Is 8.2 ft safe when the cap is 8 ft?

No. The cap is a hard line measured to the top of the structure, and a floor check can stop an overrun.

Negotiating With the Venue

Ask early and in writing. Venues answer height questions with a rule, but they answer reconfiguration questions with a decision. A stand that can drop a bay is easier to approve than one that needs an exemption.

Attach the elevation drawing to the question. A drawing gets a specific answer; a description gets a general one that may not apply to your booth.

Reuse Across Halls

A modular frame built in one metre bays can be lowered for a strict hall and raised for an island. That flexibility is what turns one purchase into a kit that serves a calendar.

Keep the shorter legs with the frame and mark the heights on the setup sheet, so the crew on site does not have to reason about the rule under time pressure.

Why Buyers Work With BrandMate Display

  • Factory direct. Display hardware is produced in our own workshop, so a specification question gets an engineering answer, not a distributor guess.
  • Fifteen years of build experience. We have supplied light boxes, fabric walls and booth hardware since 2010 to buyers in 150+ countries.
  • One contact, written replies. A named account manager answers inside two hours on working days, in writing.
  • Small runs accepted. Low MOQ with wholesale tiers; a single test unit is possible before a rollout.
  • Brand work at scale. Production partner for retail chains, exhibition builders and agencies across several markets.
  • Dates confirmed in writing. Production and shipping dates are quoted together and held.

We will reply within 2 hours.
