Creases in PVC Banners: Causes and Recovery

Creases in PVC banners are storage damage, not print damage. What flattens a fold, what makes it permanent, and how to roll and store so it never creases again.

What a Crease Actually Is

A PVC banner is a polyester scrim laminated inside two plasticised layers, with ink on the face. A fold held under weight or cold allows plasticiser to migrate away from the line, the layer thins and the ink coat stretches.

That is why a crease looks pale rather than merely bent. A new fold can recover with warmth and tension; an old one has changed the material.

Recovery in Order of Effort

1. Hang with even weight. Fix the whole top edge at every grommet and weight the bottom with a bar or sandbags. Leave it in a warm room for a day.

2. Warm the room, not the banner. 20 to 25 degrees softens the layer safely. Radiators and heater vents warp the face unevenly.

3. Steam the back. A garment steamer 10 to 15 centimetres from the reverse, moving continuously, in passes of five to ten seconds. Never hold still.

4. Roll and rest. Roll around a core with the print face out and leave it overnight to settle a light wave.

5. Decide honestly. If a torch at a low angle still shows the line, a venue spotlight will show it too.

What Makes It Worse

A hot iron on the print face. Ink glosses and the PVC shrinks unevenly, which cannot be reversed.

A hairdryer held close. Local heat creates waves worse than the fold.

Pulling a cold banner tight. Below about 10 degrees the scrim deforms.

Wetting the face. Water lifts ink at the crease and leaves a mark.

Storage That Prevents the Problem

Roll, never fold. A 10 centimetre core is enough for a standard banner, and the print face goes outward so ink is never pressed against the backing.

Keep the roll in a rigid tube, standing upright, above 10 degrees and away from damp. Label both ends with the event name and the words roll, do not fold.

When to Change Material Instead

If a banner is folded and unfolded every month, the material is wrong for the job. A knit tension panel folds into a bag and returns flat on a frame, with no PVC layer to take a set.

If the banner waves along its edge because it hangs from grommets on a small frame, a frame that holds a sewn edge solves the wave as well as the crease.

A Short Inspection Routine

Before an event, unroll and look along the surface at a low angle in strong light. A soft ridge will hang out; a pale sharp line will not. Sorting banners into those two piles takes five minutes and prevents a photographed wall with a white stripe through the logo.

Common Questions

Can you iron a PVC banner?

Only from the back, on the lowest setting, through a cotton cloth, and never on the print face. Most folds respond better to hanging with weight.

How long does a crease take to fall out?

A new fold usually relaxes in 24 to 48 hours hanging in a warm room with even weight. A fold stored for months often leaves a visible line.

How should banners be stored?

Rolled on a core with the print face out, standing upright in a rigid tube, above 10 degrees and away from damp.

Why is the crease line pale?

The PVC layer has thinned along the fold and the ink has stretched. The material changed, not just bent, which is why some lines cannot be recovered.

What should I replace instead of repair?

A banner with a pale sharp line or cracked ink along the fold. No treatment restores a damaged PVC layer.

Field Fixes That Work

At the venue, hang the banner with even weight and leave it while the rest of the stand is built. Warmth and time do more than any tool, and they cost nothing.

If a line remains, steam the reverse in short passes and let it hang between them. Do not chase it with an iron on the morning of the show.

Buying So It Does Not Happen

Specify rolled delivery on a core, ask for a storage tube with the order, and check the hem stitching on the sample. A banner that arrives rolled and is stored rolled does not develop the folds that need recovery.

If the banner is folded every month, change the material rather than the technique. A knit tension panel folds and returns flat, which removes the problem instead of managing it.

Why Buyers Work With BrandMate Display

  • Factory direct. Display hardware is produced in our own workshop, so a specification question gets an engineering answer, not a distributor guess.
